I do own Photoshop CS6 and Painter 12--but this is the software I prefer to sketch in. Why? Because for me it provides the closest sensation to sketching with traditional pencil and paper.

The pencil tool creates lines that are almost identical to the lines you would get with a regular pencil. If you have a pressure sensitive laptop or monitor (Wacom Cintiq) then the experience is very similar to using a pencil on paper. Download the free trial version and try it out first to see what I mean.

I also really like the simplicity of the interface. The workspace is not filled up with menu bars and palettes. This is really important if you are working on a small monitor or a pressure sensitive laptop with a small screen. Having written that, each new version of Sketchbook Pro does add more and more available palettes and windows, but it is still very easy to keep most of the palettes closed and still have access to the various tools.

Here are some of the great NEW features in Sketchbook Pro 6. Check out the video to see these in action.

1. Additional Brush Libraries! My current favorite is the new "Synthetic Round Brush 2." These brushes are similar to the natural brush feel of many of the brushes in Painter 12.

2. Copic Color Palettes. Makes selecting colors and incorporating slight variations so easy!

3. Brush size can now be controlled with the right and left square bracket keys (the same keyboard shortcut as Photoshop).

4. Layer Blending Modes (normal, multiply, screen, and add)

5. New Color Puck (similar to Painter)

My usual workflow is to start out a sketch in Sketchbook Pro and then I bring it into Photoshop or Painter to finish. However, with the new features in Sketchbook Pro 6 I believe I will be doing more work in this program. It's also just more fun to use!

Bottom line: When it comes to pure sketching---this software is my first choice. Combined with a pressure sensitive laptop or monitor--it doesn't get any more natural feeling than this.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program ( What's this?)
I've been doing digital art for six or seven years now and have used a handful of good programs. I currently have Photoshop, Corel Painter, Manga Studio and GIMP (which is open-source), and have also used Photoshop Elements. So, I think I can give a good, objective review of this software.

First off, this has a rather charming and unique interface that focuses a lot on radial menus, which is kind of a nice change of pace. This makes the interface and screen less cluttered, but everything you need is easy and quick to access. It has a good, solid set of basic tools: pencils, pens, airbrushes, etc. with the addition of a couple of brushes to add texture (charcoal, cammo) which are very useful. Now keep in mind, basic tools can get you all the way to (over very close to) photo-realism if you're skilled and patient enough. After all, look at what artists can do in real life with just a pencil, eraser, and paper. Just looking at some of the work people have done with this program will show you it's capable of some impressive results. But as is often the case, it isn't as much about the software as it is about the artist who uses it. You still have to have skill =)

I won't compare this to Photoshop or similar programs, because those are somewhat different programs. But you could compare this to Corel Painter (obviously this would be a scaled-down version). And I have to mention the open-source software GIMP, here, as well as similar free/low-cost programs. The price of Sketchbook Pro is fair, but I can't help but mention you could actually get more for less, with some other programs. GIMP, for example has equivalent drawing/painting tools but also the photo-editing/filter capabilities that Sketchbook doesn't have.

But sometimes it all comes down to which program do you LIKE better. And this is where many might really gravitate to Sketchbook Pro. As I said, the interface is very nice and some people may love it even if they have access to cheaper programs with more options. So as far as how much I like this program, I would give it 4 stars, but since the value compared to what you get is a little modest, I'm going to give this three stars. I'd give it 3 1/2 if I was able to. Certainly check this program out. I plan on using it right alongside the other ones I use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple tool with an adequate amount of features., October 9, 2012
This review is from: SketchBook Pro 6 (CD-ROM)
Sketchbook Pro 6 is a great tool for people who are like casual digital drawing. It is a good tool for those who do this seriously. It is an adequate tool for those who do it semi-professionally. A professional wouldn't use this except as a "fun drawing tool."

It says that it can create professional illustrations and that's true. For all intents and purposes it is a paint-only program that is paired to the tablet/stylus crowd. If you could imagine having a canvas or paper in front of you and then just about any tool you wanted and color of paint/oils/chalk - that's what this is.

Note that I left out any sort of filters. This is NOT a graphic design program or a photo editing/manipulation program. This is ONLY a drawing program.

You can smudge and use tools as you would in "real life", but none of the higher-end functions that you might be expecting.

This is a decent price for the software, but if you go directly to their website, you can download a free trial and see if this is what you're looking for and then come back here and buy it.

A replacement for Photoshop this is not.

Edit: I changed this to a 4-star review because for a drawing-only program it's a 5 star program. For a graphic program which is how it masquerades as, it's a 3 star program - combine that and it's a 4 star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Software, Though the Manual Needs Some Work, October 26, 2012
This review is from: Anime Studio Pro 9 (CD-ROM)
This was an amazing piece of software that will take you to the next level in regards to creating anime. I did also try the Debut version of the software and though it had some of the functionality of the Pro version, this version by far was superior. The program, though a bit complex to learn at the front end, truly takes off once you have mastered the controls, and makes the task of animation much easier than the frame by frame animation of the past.

One of the things that I enjoyed the most on this program was the automatic figure image tracing functionality. In just one click you have the program doing all of the work to develop the vector drawing that you need to move forward.

As I said the manual for this is a bit cumbersome, but there are definite parts that I found to be more helpful than others. All-in-all though it does take some time to master the controls and the skills needed to be successful in this type of program, and I found this out the hard way as I slogged through my initial learning within the program.

If you are like me and have a passion for drawing comics, this is a program that will definitely blow you away!

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME ANIMATION SOFTWARE, December 31, 2012
By
This review is from: Anime Studio Pro 9 (CD-ROM)
This is an awesome animation software program, the other reviewers said they don't know how to use the software since they had not invested the time to test and learn to use it, this latest version allows the user to import PSD Layers made in Photoshop or Painter into ASP9 and position them in a 3D scene changing the Z parameters with the Layer Tool, just make a scene with an Animation and a background and insert it into a Bone or Group Layer, insert multiple Bone or Group Layers with scenes into a Switch Layer to make multiple scene clips that can be made into one long Movie if you like, the same technique can be used for Onion Skin Animation, putting multiple Drawings into a Switch layer and advancing the Timeline marker and selecting what Drawing or Image you want to appear onscreen for the number of frames you select, the Drawings Tools have been greatly improved from previous versions, Drawings are made by click and drag or using a Pen Tablet, click and Drag is best, art skill and a good knowledge of Animation are very important to make quality Animation, everything you need to make great Animation Movies with Lip Sync and Effects is here, if you do this for a hobby there's a lot of ready made material that comes with the software, ready made stuff is great for testing, if you are a professional you can use your Art Illustration knowledge to test the software until you can make Drawings the way you like, you can make far better Artwork than the ready made stuff that comes with the software. I recommend if you are a professional and don't have the money to buy Toon Boom Animate Pro, I also recommend Toon Boom Studio but it costs more but overall ASP9 is great.

Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Anime Studio Pro 9 (CD-ROM)
Overall, I am not in the least-bit dissapointed by this purchase. Though there is much that I find lacking for 3D, in this 2D environment, it does what it does, perfectly.

The ONLY thing which dissapointed me, which I may have used, but due to the issue, I will not use... is the character generator. Though it may have worked flawlessly in previous generations of the program, now it seems to be nearly dead. It loads fine, but attempting to change any of the character settings seems to cause the whole program to choke and die. (Someone messed-up the code, I expect an update in the near future to fix this issue.) The great thing about the character generator, is that it creates all the "other" files for you. Lip-sync, animations, etc... for each character, which you have altered to your taste.

PROS: Fast, intuitive (about 90%), customizable, 3D/2D camera, imports 3D, has 3D orientation of all 2D vectors to make your own 3D in 2D in 3D (if that makes sense), and auto lip-sync is a major +++, and the 2D to 3D conversions and ability is head-spinning in a good-way.

CONS: "3D models" import at fixed orientation to NSEW, and can not be rotated. (You have to rotate the camera around the object, and thus, have to rotate everything in the 2D world to "fake" 3D rotation of a 3D object. Thus, every 3D object is all rotated at once. Think of it like google-maps, and everything that is a 3D object is fixed on the ground.) NOTE: This is not th ecase for anything made 3D, using 2D vectors in the program. Those rotate individually, normally.

New version = new bugs to handle. (First patch has handled a great majority of them, some deeper bugs still exist, but are not crippling, except for the character generator one, which is painfully still functioning.)

FINAL THOUGHTS: Save your money to get the PRO version... You will not be dissapointed having this in your collection of tools for animation. Where flash fails miserably, this program excells. It just works better.

The Implications of 3D Computer Animation

3D computer animation is making a big impact in the animation industry. Realism is the key for the rising demand of 3D animation. It is a challenging technology for prospective artists and for professional animators alike to develop new editions and versions of the existing 3D animation programs. The frames of the models and the shots are sometimes simple, but the motion or the movements of the characters is where the creativity and skills of the animator comes in.

In 3D computer animation, visual styling is one of the categories that need to be considered. It is not just how the objects being animated are going to look but it also focuses on how the images are going to be rendered, as well as the methods to be used for animation. It is about the complexity of the process. The production of the object must be capable being done within the limits of the work. Blending the motion of the characters is possible to achieve with the use of many new sources, provided that the movements of the cartoon is realistic. Planning and putting guidelines before the actual production of the picture must be done. Directing the movements of the character must be done by actual people who are experts in taking shots of any characters motion. Cinematography is also a vital element of animation since the animators have the power to control the position and the movement of the camera when doing a computer animated picture.

3d Computer Animation

In the actual story, the sequence of the drawn images and the applied lighting has a big impact. These aspects of the process are done during the planning stage and the formation of the three dimensional characters. Facial animation is now more prioritized than in the past when it comes to 3D computer animation. Even the slow blinking of the eyes and the movements of the eyeballs are now given detailed attention. Facial manipulation level and the methods on how it will be done will give each character a good effect and style.

If you are planning to enroll in animation schools and you are interested to become an animator, try to do some early work on 3D animation programs to practice your skills. Whichever field you are leaning to, and whatever direction you would like to go in the field of animation, it is still better to have an idea on how have the basic skills in 3D computer animation. 3D computer animation is considered one of the most popular types of animation today. It includes making films, video games, and animated characters. Entering an animation school is the best way to improve your potentials and to learn everything about three dimensional computer animations. It will surely help you in deciding what career in the field of animation to take.

Computer Animation in Post Production

One of the most sought after jobs in the market today is computer animation. The technology of computer animation is getting simpler and simpler day by day; simultaneously, the opportunities for people aspiring to become computer animators have increased tremendously.

The Technique

Traditionally, animation always used to be done in the manual way. The most popularly adopted method was to create a series of cartoon frames, which were then combined into a film. Another method was by using physical models, which were placed in a certain place and the image was captured; the model was then moved and the next image captured; and the process used to continue.

But, the conventional way has been replaced by computer animation. Computer animation, which is a part of computer graphics, is the technique of creating moving images with the use of computers. It is created by means of 3D or 2D computer graphics. Computer graphics is also referred to as 'Computer-Generated Imagery'. An image is shown on the computer screen, which creates an illusion of movement and this is replaced by a new image, which is slightly different from the previous image. Sophisticated computer animation involves moving the camera or the objects in a more refined way, wherein, the law of physics is used for achieving this.

The Software

Computer animation can be created with the help of a computer and animation software. Cinema 4D, Amorphium, Poser, and Ray Dream Studio are some examples of animation software. Many software options are available and prices vary according to the sophistication of the programs.

Computer animators are creative artists who use high-tech tools for achieving their creative perfection, but the ultimate reason for their achievement is their creative vision.

Forms of Animation

There are different types of animation available:

o Scripting Systems was the earliest system used for motion control, where the computer animator writes a script in animation language. One of such scripting languages is Actor Script Animation Language.

o Procedural Animation (which defines the movement over time), uses the law of physics for generating a movement. For example, consider a motion, which is the result of another action, as in the case of a ball, which if thrown towards an object, hits that particular object and causes it to move in the desired direction.

o Representational Animation is a technique, wherein an object changes its shape during animation. This is sub-divided into three categories - articulated object animation, soft object animation, and morphing.

o Stochastic Animation, which controls a groups of objects like fireworks and waterfalls.

o Behavioral Animation, where a group of objects behaves according to a set pattern as indicated by the animator.

Computer generated animation is used in various diverse fields such as films, television, videos, advertising, gaming, website designing and in a host of other situations. Due to its wide range of application, computer animation has seen a spurt in growth in the last few years.

Audiences all over the world, especially young audiences, are captivated by the extreme graphics and sound effects, which have been introduced in television programs, movies as well as in commercials. Use of multimedia makes the presentation even more attractive and effective.

Careers in Computer Animation

Schools have developed animation courses in early 1980s. Through the years, the demands in the field of computer graphics have grown fast. Skills in computer animation are important requirements to achieve a good paying job. Animation courses have focused on specific roles associated in a certain production, but they have common themes and this is the key towards getting a career in computer animation. These themes include character animation, sound, drawing, 2D and 3D animation, studio practice, film theory and production process.

The schools should maintain the high-tech hardware and software. Once you have finished your animation course, you have the chance to work on the prestigious studios around the world. These studios include DreamWorks, ESC Entertainment, Framestore CFC, Mill and Aardman Animations, and The Moving Picture Company.

Animation companies hire creative people who have extreme abilities in drawing. Such skills may be acquired through schooling. You will need to enroll in an animation course in order to gain skills in computer graphics. If you really want to be a great animator, certain discipline should be considered in computer animation. It is important to enroll in any course because you really are interested in it and not being manipulated by others. You will not learn the principles of animation if you were just forced by others to study it.

Courses in animation are also available through the net. If you don't have the time to go to college everyday because of your hectic schedule, online computer animation school is perfect for you. Online computer animation schools offer variety of related courses in animation. Areas of study include computer graphics, cell animation, 3D modeling, 3D set construction, multimedia, Interactive animation and more. You may choose among these for the specialization that you would like to concentrate on. Numerous online schools may give you proper training to help you achieve your dream of becoming a great animator. The best part about online schools is that you may study right at the comfort of your home.

Different approaches are being taught to students who prefer to enroll the course in a prestigious animation school. The school provides high tech tools and latest learning in computer animation. You will be able to widely apply and practice your skills in large and complete laboratory. Computer animation courses include all that you need in the field to get ahead. You may study programs in software, hardware and technologies in creating realistic animation. Learn to develop your skills in creating backgrounds and lighting effects and story lines, textures and characters. Layering techniques, visual effects and articulation of characters is being taught in animation training. After acquiring enough knowledge in animation course, start setting your work plan. You should enhance your skills in computer animation if you want to excel in the field, and now is the time to prove others and to yourself that you will be a great animator.

The Growth in Computer 3D Animation Software

If you are interested in computer graphics or animation, then you are in luck. There have been some amazing advances in that field, and as a result there are some great computer animation software programs available. Whether you are interested in creating cartoon animations for business or if you want to create animations for personal use, this is a great time to get started.

Animation has come a long way from Walt Disney's Steamboat Willie cartoon animations in the 1920's. Just take a look at films, such as Toy Story and Jurassic Park; even television shows like Babylon 5, where classic animation has jumped to new animations at warp speed by using one major tool - the computer.

The computer can speed up both the creative process of animating characters as well as the time it takes to get a film or TV show to the screen. Even Julie Andrews came out with the quote "Movie animation has come a long way since we frolicked with cartoon penguins, sheep and carousel ponies in Mary Poppins" when she was doing voice work on Shrek 2.

A computer is just a tool, so without a skilled artist at the drawing board or moving the mouse, nothing can be created. And, artists need proven solutions and programs that they can depend on in order to produce the wonderful images they do.

Computer animation software helps teach the skills needed to be a successful animator. Computer animation has been called a healthy marriage between art and science. That seems to say it all.

One of the largest and fastest growing areas within the computer graphics and animation field is in the area of computer games. Computer animation programs and software are constantly being improved to keep up with the animations and graphics that are becoming more complex, even as the technology in the hardware simplifies.

Also, since computers have become almost as common as blackboards, crayons and pencils in classrooms, including preschools and kindergartens, various creators of software applications have designed numerous programs for young children. They can learn to create animations, as well as several other skills specifically designed for their level. Many of the features of educational computer programs, such as interactivity, are completely in-line with educational principals, which is a huge advantage for everyone.

If you have children, then you may be interested in learning about computer animation programs that are available for them. Through fun games, animated tutorials and even vocabulary sections, children learn the essential computer skills they will need when using other computer animation software, even on the preschool level. Check out several programs, as some even have bonus items, such as a My First Software mouse pad and extra books.
